Never worry about lost tasks, empty projects, or missing comments. With a paid plan, Todoist automatically creates backups of all your active projects, so you can easily restore them at any time.
Can't find a project or task? First, check whether it was archived rather than deleted. Keep in mind that deleting a parent project also deletes the sub-projects nested inside it. To see recent changes like tasks added, edited, completed, or deleted, open Reporting and filter by project, person, event type, or date range. Reporting doesn't log project changes, so it won't show a deleted project, but it can help you trace missing tasks. About backups
Todoist creates a full backup on days you've been active and made any changes to your account. Up to 21 backups are stored as ZIP files and created at midnight in your time zone. Your projects are backed up as CSV files, so it’s easy to export or import back into Todoist. Whenever Todoist creates a new backup, it automatically deletes the oldest backup.
Every Todoist backup includes the following:
- Active projects and tasks
- Dates and time
- Descriptions
- Task duration
- Deadlines
- Recurring dates, excluding start dates
- Up to 500 comments per task
- Links to file attachments
Completed tasks and archived projects aren’t included in a backup.

Download a backup
- Click your avatar at the top-left.
- Click Settings.
- Open the Backups tab. If you've turned two-factor authentication on for your account, copy the one-time password from your authentication app to access your backups.
- Click Download next to a backup. This downloads a ZIP file containing CSV files for each of your active projects.
- Extract the contents of the backup to your computer.
You can only access and download backups while using the Todoist web app or desktop apps.
Restore a backup
- Create a new project.
- Click the three dots icon at the top-right.
- Select Import from CSV.
- Drag your project CSV file to the upload window, or click Upload from your computer.
All the active tasks, dates, comments, and file attachments from the project CSV file will appear in the new project. If you're using a list, board, or Week view of the calendar layout, Todoist retains the layout in the new project.
You can only access and restore backups while using the Todoist web app or desktop apps.
