Did one of your automations unexpectedly stop working? If an automation fails, you'll see a "Needs Attention" error indicator on its page. These issues may be due to a disconnected account, a change in how a connected service works, or missing app permissions. Learn how to troubleshoot any failed automation - no previous coding knowledge needed.
Check the error message
When an automation runs into a problem, it displays specific details about what went wrong. To review the issue:
- Click Dashboard.
- Click the automation that's showing an error.
- Read the error message. It usually tells you exactly which step failed and why.
Reconnect or re-authorize the app
The most common cause of automation failures is a disconnected account. This typically happens if you recently changed your password, revoked permission access, or if the connected app's login session expired.
To re-authorize your account:
- Click Connections in your navigation menu.
- Select the app showing the error.
- Click Connect to start the re-authorization process.
- Sign in to your app account and click Approve (or allow access) when prompted.
- Return to Automations to check if your workflow is running smoothly again.
Confirm you're using the right account
If you manage multiple accounts for the same app, like a personal Gmail and a work Gmail, make sure you authorize the exact account the automation was originally set up to use. Each connected account appears separately in your Connections list, so double-check that you select the correct profile.
Check app permissions
Some apps require specific security permissions to be granted during the initial setup. If the automation still fails to run after you've reconnected it:
- Disconnect the app entirely from Connections.
- Set it up again from scratch.
- Check every permission box the app requests during authorization.
Copy or download the manifest
You may need to copy or download a JSON file of the automation's workflow manifest for troubleshooting. Here's where to find it:
- Click the automation to view its details.
- Click the three dots icon at the top-right.
- Select Copy manifest. The workflow manifest is saved to your clipboard.
- Select Download manifest to save it as a JSON file to your computer.
Fix the automation in chat
If the issue is caused by the automation's core steps rather than a broken connection, open the Automation preview. Use the chat bar to instruct Automations to fix it. This conversational approach lets you iterate on your workflow without starting from scratch.
Update your workflow steps
To troubleshoot and adjust your automation steps:
- Click Dashboard and select the broken automation.
- Open the Automation preview.
- Describe the problem or paste the exact error message.
- Use natural language to instruct Automations to update the workflow.
