Chats are how you build and manage automations in Todoist Automations. Describe a workflow, ask for a change, or work through a problem, and the assistant handles it in one conversation. Every chat saves and titles itself as soon as you send your first message, so you can pick up where you left off.
Ask for what you need
The assistant understands plain language, so there are no commands to memorize. Use a chat to:
- Create an automation by describing what you want it to do
- Edit an automation by asking to change its schedule, adjust a step, or add a condition
- Ask how your current automations are set up
- Work through an automation or connection that isn’t behaving as expected
Because every message stays in the same conversation, the assistant keeps track of your automation as you go, so you don’t need to repeat yourself.
Start a new chat
To start a new chat, log in to Todoist Automations at automations.todoist.com. Then, click New automation in the sidebar. A new chat opens with the message box ready for your first request.
Move the chat panel
The chat panel sits in one of two positions:
- Floating: appears in the bottom-right corner of the page, which is the default
- Docked: anchors to the full height of the right side of the page, alongside your content
Click Switch chat to sidebar in the chat header to dock the panel, or Switch chat to floating to undock it. Your choice carries over to your next chat, so you only need to set it once.
When the panel is docked, drag the grip icon in the header to resize its width. Click Minimize chat to collapse the panel down to the chat box. Click the collapsed chat bar to bring the full conversation back.
Rename, archive, and delete a chat
Click Chats in the sidebar to see every conversation you’ve had. They’re split into two tabs:
- Active: chats you’re using now or want to keep at hand
- Archived: chats you’ve finished with and moved out of your main list
On the Chats page, each chat has Rename, Archive, and Delete buttons. Inside a chat, click the arrow next to the chat title for Rename chat and Archive chat. The same options appear in the chat history list when you hover over a chat and click the More actions icon.
Renaming opens a Rename conversation dialog, where you set the Conversation title and click Save.
Archived chats have an Unarchive button to move them back to Active, and a Delete button to remove them for good.
Return to a previous chat
Inside a conversation, click the back arrow in the chat header, or choose Chat history from the chat title menu. Your recent chats appear grouped by when you last used them: Today, Yesterday, Last Week, and Earlier.
Select any chat to pick up where you left off, or click New Chat at the bottom to start a fresh one.
Build your first automation
Open a chat and describe what you want to happen in your own words, the way you’d explain it to a colleague. Start with something small, like a weekly reminder, and adjust it in the same conversation until it does what you need.
