On or after December 14, 2026, Todoist will permanently delete activity history recorded before January 20, 2019. This history is kept in an older system that we’re retiring. Your tasks, projects, comments, and completed tasks all stay in your account. What goes is the record of when things happened to them.
If you want to keep this older activity, request a copy of your account data by December 7, 2026.
Activity history
Your activity history is a log of changes made in your account. You see it in Reporting. Each entry records what changed, when, and in which project. For example:
- A task was added, edited, completed, uncompleted, moved, or deleted
- A comment was added or deleted
- A project was added, renamed, archived, shared, or deleted
- A section was added, edited, or deleted
The activity history is a record of changes, not the items themselves. Deleting an entry about a completed task doesn’t delete the completed task.
Activity from before January 20, 2019
On January 20, 2019, Todoist moved activity history to the system that stores it today. Activity recorded before that date stayed in the older system, which we’re now retiring.
On or after December 14, 2026, we’ll delete every activity entry recorded before 12:00 UTC on January 20, 2019. This applies to all Todoist accounts, on every plan.
You’re affected if you used Todoist before January 20, 2019. We’ll email every account created before that date ahead of the deletion. If your account has no activity from that period, nothing changes for you.
Data that stays in your account
The deletion only removes activity history. These stay exactly as they are, including anything created before January 20, 2019:
- Tasks
- Projects
- Sections
- Comments
- Completed tasks
Activity recorded from January 20, 2019 onwards isn’t affected either. Reporting works as it does today.
To look back at older work without the activity history, view your completed tasks. These include tasks completed before 2019.
Copy of your activity history
You can request a copy of your account data, including your activity from before January 20, 2019, by December 7, 2026. If we’ve told you your account is scheduled for deletion, request your copy at least 7 days before the date in that email, so we have time to prepare it before your account is deleted. The Export option in Reporting can’t include this older activity because it no longer appears there.
We’ll email you a link to a ZIP file named Todoist data.zip. It can take up to 2 business days to prepare, so give yourself some room before the deadline.
Older activity in your copy
Your copy contains your account data as JSON files, a plain-text format you can open in any text editor or web browser. Your activity history is split across numbered files, such as activities_0001.json and activities_0002.json. Recent activity comes first, so your activity from before 2019 is in the highest-numbered files. Your copy includes up to 1,000,000 activity entries. If your account has more than that from January 20, 2019 onwards, your copy won’t include your older activity. For step-by-step help with opening the files, see Open the files in your Todoist data export.
To find your older activity:
- Unzip Todoist data.zip.
- Open the archive folder.
- Open the activities file with the highest number.
- Look for entries with an event_date before 2019-01-20.
Each entry includes these fields:
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| event_date | When the change happened, in UTC |
| event_type | What happened, such as added, updated, completed, or deleted |
| object_type | What changed: item means a task, note means a comment, and project and section mean what they say |
| extra_data | Details such as the task name or project name |
FAQ
I can’t see my activity from before 2019 in Reporting. Has it already been deleted?
No. Activity from before January 20, 2019 hasn’t appeared in Reporting since February 2026, but we still store it until December 14, 2026. You can request a copy of it by December 7, 2026.
I’m on the Beginner plan and only see 7 days of activity. Does this affect me?
Yes. On the Beginner plan, Reporting only shows your last 7 days of activity, but we still store your full activity history. If you upgrade to Pro or Business, Reporting shows your activity from January 20, 2019 onwards. Activity from before that date can only be included in a copy of your account data, so if you want to keep it, request a copy by December 7, 2026.
Who receives an email about this?
We email every account created before January 20, 2019. If your account has no activity from before that date, there’s nothing to delete and nothing you need to do. The email is an account notice, so you’ll receive it even if you’ve opted out of marketing emails.
Does my copy include other people’s activity in shared projects?
Your copy includes what you and your collaborators did in projects shared with you, and each entry shows who made the change.
I’m on the Business plan. Does each member need to request their own copy?
Yes. Each copy covers one person’s account. It includes the projects you’re a member of, including the team projects you’ve joined. Team projects you haven’t joined aren’t included. For example, if your team has 10 projects and you’ve joined 5 of them, your copy includes those 5.
Admins can’t request one copy for the whole team. If your team wants to keep its older activity, each member needs to request their own copy by December 7, 2026.
Can I get a copy after the deletion date?
No. After December 14, 2026, activity from before January 20, 2019 can’t be recovered or included in a copy of your account data.
Does this apply if I subscribed through the App Store or Google Play?
Yes. The deletion applies to every Todoist account with activity from before January 20, 2019, however you subscribe.
