How to use search

Search is the simplest way to find what you’re looking for in Todoist. Here’s how you can use search to find a task, project, label, filter, or comment:

  1. Click the Find search field at the top.
  2. Type the keyword(s) that you’re looking for.
  3. You’ll see a few tasks, projects, labels and filters that match your keyword(s) below the search bar. If you see what you’re searching for, click it to open it.
  4. If you haven’t found what you're looking for yet, look at more results by clicking Show more results at the bottom.
  5. You’ll see all the tasks that match your keyword(s). When you find the task you’re looking for, click it to open it.
  6. (Optional) If you want to search through task comments, click the Comments pane to the top right of your search results.
  7. (Optional) If you want to search through completed tasks, click Search completed tasks below the search results.

Quickly get the results you want by entering a query directly into the search bar. For instance, try entering today & p1 to see every priority 1 task due today.

Narrow down your search

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can narrow down your search results by date, by priority level, by project and more by using queries in your search. For example, you could enter August 7 directly into the search bar to see all tasks due on August 7th. Here are a few more examples:

How to search for completed tasks

Sometimes you want to check back in on something you’ve already finished. Here’s how you can search for completed tasks:

  1. Type in a keyword(s) into the Find search bar at the top, and press enter.
  2. At the bottom of your search results, click on Search completed tasks.
  3. You can now see all completed tasks that match your keyword(s).
  4. You can also uncomplete them as usual or read the comments.

  4. You can now see all completed tasks that match your keyword(s). You can also uncomplete by swiping right or permanently delete the task by swiping left.
  5. You can also tap any of the completed task search results and you’ll open the project where it belongs.

If you’re using Premium or Business, you can narrow down your search of completed tasks by project, date or other criteria by using filter queries in your search. For example: if you are looking for a task called "Meeting" that was in a project called "Work", you can search for search: Meeting #Work. Please note this isn't yet supported on the web app but we plan to add this in a future update. 

FAQ

Q: Are tasks in archived projects included in search results?

A: No, it's not possible to search for archived projects and their tasks.
