What can I do if I'm not getting any notifications?

Are you having trouble with your notifications? Maybe you added a reminder to your task, but it's not showing up on your device? Try out these troubleshooting steps and you’ll have your notifications pop-up in no time. 

If you haven't already, we suggest trying the steps below before doing further troubleshooting:

  • Log out of Todoist and then log back in.
  • Restart your device.
  • Make sure your device is not in low power mode, running a battery saver app or is set to *Do Not Disturb*.

Make sure Todoist notifications are enabled for your device

Each browser has its own steps to enable web notifications. Please click on the browser you’re using for the latest instructions:

Make sure you’ve also enabled notifications in your operating system’s settings.
  1. Click the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
  2. Click Notifications.
  3. On the left, select Todoist.
  4. Make sure either Banners or Alerts is selected.
  1. Press the Windows key and select Settings.
  2. Click System.
  3. On the left, select Notifications & Actions.
  4. Make sure that Get notifications from apps and other senders is toggled on.
  5. Scroll down until you find Todoist and make sure it's toggled on.
  6. (Optional) You can customize the type of notifications you’d like to see by click on Todoist.
  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Search for Todoist.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Make sure Allow Notifications is toggled on.
  5. Select the notification type you’d like to see pop-up.

If you're using Todoist on iOS, you should also:

  • Make sure you have background refresh enabled for Todoist by opening your device's Settings app, selecting Todoist, then check if the Background App Refresh option is enabled.
  • If you regularly use mobile data (rather than WiFi), you should make sure that mobile data is enabled for Todoist: Open your Settings app, select Mobile Data, then scroll down until you find Todoist.
  • If your device is running iOS 15 or above, you should check whether you're using Apple's Focus feature.
  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Scroll down until you find Todoist.
  4. Tap Todoist and select Notifications, this will open the notifications settings for Todoist. 
  5. Tap the toggle next to Show notifications tab and select the notifications you’d like to see pop up.

Check if your reminders are set up correctly

  1. Click your avatar in the top-right corner of Todoist and select Settings.
  2. Click the Reminders tab.
  3. Toggle on the type of notification you’d like to receive:
    • Desktop notifications to get notifications via your operating system.
    • Mobile notifications to get notifications on your mobile device.
    • Emails to receive a reminder email on the address that you’ve added via Settings → Account.
  4. (Optional) If you want to get a notification for all tasks with a due time, select a relative time from the Automatic reminders drop-down.

  2. Under Settings, click Reminders.
  3. Toggle on the type of notification you’d like to receive:
    • Desktop notifications to get notifications via your computer’s operating system.
    • Mobile notifications to get notifications on your mobile device.

  4. (Optional) To get a reminder for all tasks with a due time, select a relative time from the Automatic reminders drop-down.
Focus Assist blocks Todoist notifications by default. If you want to receive notifications in priority mode, make sure to add Todoist via Windows' SettingsSystemFocus Assist → under Priority only, click Customize your priority list → click Add an app → select Todoist.
  1. At the top right of your Todoist, tap the gear icon.
  2. Tap Reminders.
  3. Tap Remind Me Via, select the type of notification you’d like to receive:
    • Mobile Notification to get notifications on your mobile device.
    • Desktop Notification to get notifications via your computer’s operating system.
    • Email to receive a reminder email on the address that you’ve added via Settings → Account.
  4. (Optional) When you snooze a reminder on iOS, you can choose to be reminded again at a later time. Tap When snoozed… and select an interval from the list.
  5. (Optional) To get a reminder for all tasks with a due time, tap Automatic Reminders and select a relative time from the list.
  1. At the top left of your Todoist, tap the menu icon.
  2. Tap Settings and select Reminders.
  3. Tap Remind Me Via, select the type of notification you’d like to receive:
    • Mobile push notification to get notifications on your mobile device.
    • Desktop push notification to get notifications via your computer’s operating system.
    • Email to receive a reminder email on the address that you’ve added via Settings → Account.
  4. (Optional) When you snooze a reminder on Android, you can choose to be reminded again at a later time. Tap When snoozed… and select an interval from the list.
  5. (Optional) To get a reminder for all tasks with a due time, tap Send automatic reminders... and select a relative time from the list.

Make sure your Todoist is up to date

  1. Click your avatar in the top-right corner of Todoist.
  2. Select New version available to update.
  1. Open the App Store app.
  2. In the left-hand menu, choose Updates.
  3. If an update is available for Todoist, click Update.
  1. When an update is available, it’ll be automatically downloaded in the background. A desktop notification will inform you of the update.
  2. Close the app fully (ensure it’s not running in the system tray in the bottom-right corner) for the update to start.
  3. If an update is available for Todoist, it will now be installed.
  1. Open the App Store app.
  2. In the bottom right, tap Updates.
  3. If an update is available for Todoist, tap Update.
  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. In the top left, tap the menu icon, and select My Apps.
  3. If an update is available for Todoist, tap Update.

FAQ

Can I get a default reminder for tasks without a due time?

No, simply because the default reminders are relative to the due time of a task.

I am still not receiving reminders. What can I do?

If you're still not receiving reminders after following the steps at the start of this article, here are some more tips:

  • If you are using our web app, make sure you have Todoist open in at least one tab.
  • If you're using one of our desktop apps, make sure it's open and that you are logged in.
  • Make sure you disable programs like Clean Master and other blocker apps that prevent notifications from popping up.

I cannot make the notifications work on my Android device. What can I do? 

This can be affected by an automatic battery saver that some devices have. Here's how you can fix this:

  1. Open your device Settings.
  2. Open Apps
  3. Scroll down and find Todoist
  4. Click on Battery, and select Optimize battery usage.
  5. Select to show All apps.
  6. Find Todoist, and disable the toggle next to it.
