Use the task view to manage tasks in Todoist

To keep track of your tasks effectively, you need to pay attention to all the details. So when a task has a date, project, priority, label, set of sub-tasks, comments and more, it’s handy to manage everything in one place. 

Task view lets you do just that! Here’s how it works:

Task view

In Todoist, click a task to open the task view. 

In this view, you can:

  • Go to the task’s project by clicking the project name at the top.
  • Go to the task's section by clicking the section name at the top.
  • If you're viewing a sub-task, you will see its parent task above the task name. Click on the parent task's name to open it in task view.
  • If you're viewing a sub-task, click the sub-task indicator icon to view other sub-tasks below its parent task.
  • Edit the task name by clicking the task name field.
  • Add a task description (or edit an existing task description) by clicking the Description field below the task name.
  • Move to the previous/next task by clicking the chevron buttons at the top.
  • Set a date (and time) by clicking Date + on the right-hand side.
  • Add a deadline by clicking Deadline on the right hand side.

  • (Only available in shared projects) Assign the task by clicking Assignee + on the right-hand side.
  • Move the task to a different project and/or section by clicking the project name on the right-hand side.
  • Add labels via the Labels + option on the right-hand side.
  • Add reminders via the Reminders + option on the right-hand side.
  • Set the priority via theweb_flag-outline.svg flag icon on the right-hand side.
  • Get the link to the task via the web_three-dots.svgthree dots iconCopy link to task.
  • Duplicate the task via the web_three-dots.svgthree dots icon Duplicate task.
  • Complete recurring tasks and reschedule them to their next occurrence via theweb_three-dots.svg three dots icon Complete.
  • Complete recurring tasks forever via theweb_three-dots.svg three dots icon Complete forever.
  • Get the email address of a task to forward emails to it via theweb_three-dots.svgthree dots icon Add comments via email.
  • View the task's activity including who created the task (only available in shared projects) and when it was created via the web_three-dots.svgthree dots icon View task activity.
  • Delete the task via the web_three-dots.svgthree dots icon Delete task.
  • Open the task in a new window via the three dots iconOpen in new window.

  • View, edit, and add sub-tasks in the Sub-tasks field.
  • Open the task view for a sub-task by clicking on the sub-task you wish to edit.
  • View and add comments in the Comments field.

Task view

In Todoist, tap a task or a sub-task to open the task view. 

In this view, you can:

  • Tap the task breadcrumb to go to the project or section of the task.
  • Tap the sub-task breadcrumb to go to the project, section, or parent task it belongs to.
  • Make changes to a task name.
  • Swipe to scroll through the action chips of a task:
    • Tap the Description chip or the task name to either add a task description or make changes to an existing task description.
    • Tap the android_label.svgLabel chip to add a label, or tap the Labels field under the task name to remove or add more labels.
    • Tap the Location chip to add a location reminder.
    • Tap the Move to... chip to move the task to a different project.
    • Tap the android_flag.svgPriority chip to assign a priority, or tap the Priority field under the date to change the priority level of a task.
    • Tap theandroid_reminder.svgReminder chip to add a custom reminder, or tap the Reminders field under the task name to make changes to existing reminders.
    • In shared projects, tap the android_add-person.svgAssignee chip to assign a task, or tap the Assignee field under the task name to change the assignee.
  • Tap the Date field under the task name to set or change a date, time, or task duration.
  • Tap the Deadline chip to add a deadline to your task.

  • View or add task comments.
  • Tap the web_three-dots.svgthree dots icon to open the context menu. There are several options:
    • Complete recurring tasks forever.
    • Duplicate a task.
    • Copy the link of the task.
    • Show completed sub-tasks.
    • View the task's activity log.
    • Delete a task.
  • Tap Add sub-task to add a sub-task. Tap an existing sub-task to make changes.

To open the task view, simply tap the task. In this view, you can:

  • Go to the task’s project by tapping the project name at the top.
  • Go to the task's section by tapping the section name at the top.
  • If you're viewing a sub-task, tap the parent task's name to leave the sub-task's task view. You'll see the option to go to the project, section, or parent task.
  • Edit the task by tapping the task’s name.
  • Add a task description (or edit an existing task description) by tapping the Description chip or edit it in the Editing view by tapping on the task name.
  • Set or edit a date (and time) by tapping the Date field below the task name.
  • Tap the Deadline chip to add a deadline to your task.
  • (Only available in shared projects) Assign the task by tapping the android_add-person.svgAssignee chip or edit who it's assigned to by tapping the Assignee field below the task name.
  • Add labels via the android_label.svgLabel chip or remove/add more labels by tapping the Labels field below the task name. 
  • Set the priority via the android_flag.svgPriority chip or edit the set priority level by tapping the Priority field below the task name.
  • Add reminders via the android_reminder.svgReminder chip or edit existing reminders by tapping the Reminders field below the task name. 
  • View comments below Sub-tasks and add comments via the comment input field at the bottom.
  • Move the task to a different project by tapping the Move to... chip
  • Edit the task via the android_three-dots-icon.svgthree dots icon Edit task.
  • Complete recurring tasks forever via the android_three-dots-icon.svgthree dots icon Complete forever.
  • Make a copy of the task via the android_three-dots-icon.svgthree dots icon Duplicate task.
  • Get the link to the task via the android_three-dots-icon.svgthree dots icon Copy link to task.
  • Hide the task's completed sub-tasks via the android_three-dots-icon.svgthree dots icon Hide completed sub-tasks.
  • View when a task was created and by whom via the android_three-dots-icon.svgthree dots icon.
  • View the task’s activity via the android_three-dots-icon.svgthree dots icon Activity log.
  • Delete the task via the android_three-dots-icon.svgthree dots icon Delete task.
  • View, edit, and add sub-tasks in the Sub-tasks field below the task name.
  • Open the task view for a sub-task by tapping on it.

FAQ

Can I edit or delete an entry from the task activity log in the task activity view?

No, it’s not possible to edit or delete any items from the activity log.

Can I edit a completed task in the task view?

No, the task will need to be uncompleted before you can make any changes to it.

Is it possible to reorder sub-tasks in the task view?

Yes, you can drag and drop sub-tasks to the new location. 

Can I add comments via the task view if I’m on the free plan?

Yes, you can add comments and upload attachments (up to 5 MB). 

I’m on the free plan, can I view the activity log?

Yes, you can view your 1-week activity history.
