Troubleshoot login issues with the Todoist desktop apps

When logging in to the Todoist desktop apps, a new browser tab opens automatically where you’ll enter your account credentials. If you find yourself in a constant login loop between the browser and the app, see an error message, or if Todoist becomes unresponsive, follow the steps in this guide.

Use the latest version of Todoist

If a new version is available, you’ll see a pop-up in Todoist to restart and update automatically. If you need to manually reinstall and update Todoist for macOS, follow these steps.

Right-click the Todoist icon in the system tray. Then, select Quit Todoist. The new version will automatically be installed once the app is closed.

Check if pop-ups are allowed

Since the location of these settings change frequently, check the browser help page for the latest steps to turn on pop-ups:

Change the default browser

Change the default web browser temporarily to see if there is a browser-specific issue. Check the support article for your operating system:

Use the magic link

The magic link lets you create a unique URL that authenticates your Todoist account credentials and log in to the desktop apps. Use this link if the prompt to open the Todoist app doesn’t appear, or if you’re experiencing other login-related issues.

Clear application data

If the log in page is unresponsive or isn't displaying properly, here's how to clear application data in the desktop apps:

  1. Open Todoist for macOS.
  2. Click Todoist in the main menu at the top-left.
  3. Select Clear application data.

Todoist for macOS will restart and the login page will appear.

  1. Open Todoist for Windows.
  2. Click the down arrow of the Windows tray menu at the bottom-right.
  3. Right-click the Todoist app icon.
  4. Select Clear application data.

Uninstall Todoist and delete application files

Learn how to uninstall Todoist for macOS and remove all application files. Then, download and reinstall the app.

  1. Uninstall the Todoist app.
  2. Press Windows + R.
  3. Enter %APPDATA%/Todoist. This will open the Todoist app folder.
  4. Delete the contents of the folder.
  5. Reinstall the Todoist app.
