How to use location reminders

Receive a reminder about a task with your workout routine when you arrive at the gym, or be reminded to grab an umbrella when you’re leaving home. Set a location reminder in Todoist and never forget a thing when arriving or leaving at a selected place.

How to add a location reminder

You can select when to receive the location reminder, upon arrival or departure. On mobile apps, you can also change the radius of your location reminder. Here’s how to add them:

  1. If you're adding a task, click Location at the bottom of the task input field. If you're editing an existing task, click Location to the right.
  2. Start typing the address of the location and select it from the drop-down list.
  3. Select if you’d like to receive the reminder upon arrival or departure.
  4. Click Add reminder.

  1. When you’re adding a new task or editing an existing task, tap the Location chip. When you'll be adding the reminder for the first time, you will be prompted to give Todoist access to your location. 
  2. Start typing the address of the location and select it from the list.
  3. Select if you’d like to receive the reminder upon arrival or departure.
  4. You can change the radius of the location by tapping the blue circle on the map and dragging it to reduce or increase the distance from the exact location when you want to be reminded. 
  5. Tap Save to add the reminder.

  3. Select if you’d like to receive the reminder upon arrival or departure.
  4. Tap the arrow icon in the top-right to add the reminder. 
Although you can create location reminders on both your computer and mobile device, you'll only receive location reminder notifications on your mobile device. This is due to the reliance on your mobile device's location services to trigger the notification when you arrive at the specified location.

Why my location reminders are not working?

Location reminders are only available on the mobile apps. However, you can still add them from the web and desktop apps.
  1. At the top-right of your Todoist, tap the gear icon.
  2. Tap Reminders.
  3. Tap Remind Me Via.
  4. Select Mobile Notification.
  5. Tap Back to return to Reminders settings.
  6. Select Manage Location Access. You will be redirected to phone settings.
  7. Tap on Location.
  8. Select While Using the App.
  9. Toggle on Precise Location.
  10. Tap Todoist in the top-left corner to return to the phone settings.
  11.  Select Notifications.
  12. Toggle on Allow Notifications and Time-Sensitive Notifications, to make sure you receive your reminders without a delay.
Make sure to turn on Location-Based Alerts on your iPhone. Here's how:
  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Location Services.
  4. Toggle on Location.
  5. Scroll down and tap System Services.
  6. Toggle on Location-Based Alerts.
  1. Swipe up the bottom app bar to open the menu. 
  2. Tap the gear icon in the top right corner to open Settings.
  3. Select Reminders.
  4. Tap Remind Me Via.
  5. Select Mobile push notification.
  6. Tap OK to save the changes.
  7. Tap Turn on reminders and notifications.
  8. Select Permissions.
  9. Tap Location.
  10. Select Allow all the time.
  11. Toggle on Use precise location.
  12. Tap the back arrow to return to Permissions.
  13. Tap Notifications.
  14. Toggle one All Todoist notifications.
  15. Make sure that Reminders are toggled on. 
  16. Tap the back button to save the changes. 
On various Android models, the settings options may differ.

FAQ

Is it possible to receive a location-based reminder email?

No, a location-based reminder will only show up as a push notification on the device that triggers it.

I don't see the Locations chip in the Quick Add. How can I change this?

You can customize your Quick Add to show the Locations chip when creating a task. Please find the instructions in this article
